LIBRARY INFORMATION AND POLICIES
· The AMS librarian is Mrs. Karen Haggard. For more information about the library, help with research projects, reading suggestions, or library events, please visit her web page, which can be accessed through the AMS web page or at http://haggardlibrary.weebly.com .
· The AMS library is open every morning except Thursday at 8:15 and daily until 4:15. Students who need to use the library outside these times should make an advance appointment with the librarian. If a student is having difficulty getting to the library, please discuss with the homeroom teacher or contact Mrs. Haggard.
· The library is closed during Bobcat Zone.
· Students are expected to have with them their own agenda book signed by a teacher and to sign in on the computer near the door when they enter the library.
· Students may check out up to five items for a three-week period, but each student should only check out the number of items he/she can keep up with. In middle school, students do not regularly make visits to the library with their entire class. Therefore, each student’s books will be due at a different time. Students are responsible for all items they check out. A calendar and a stamp are available at the check out desk so that students can mark their agenda book calendar with the date their books are due.
· A fine of 10 cents per school day will be charged for each overdue item. Fines will continue to accrue until the overdue item has been returned. Students with overdue items or library fines will not be allowed to check out new items until they have cleared their library record. Fines are not charged on weekends or other days the library is closed. Students are encouraged to return their books as soon as they realize the items are overdue; the fine can be paid the next day. A grace period of 5 school days allows a student to return a book without a fine. Beginning with the sixth day overdue, a fine of 60 cents is charged and goes up 10 cents per school day until the item is returned. The maximum fine is $5.00 per item.
· A student may renew a book once if the book is not overdue or has not been reserved by another student.
· A student may reserve a book that is currently checked out by logging into the online Destiny catalog at school or at home. Students have been instructed how to do this. (See the Destiny link on the left for a tutorial.) When a reserved book becomes available, it will be delivered to the mailbox for the student’s homeroom teacher.
· A small number of audio books are available for checkout, with a limit of one per student. A student must have signed permission from a parent before checking out audio books. The form is available in the library and on the librarian’s web page. (Library Info>Forms)
· Students will be charged the replacement cost for any library items that are lost or damaged. If the lost item is later found and returned before the end of the school year, the student’s money would be refunded.
· A class list of overdue items will be sent to homeroom teachers on a weekly basis. This is the only notice students will receive of past due items and library fines. The student is responsible for returning overdue items and clearing fines. Report cards can be held for any student with outstanding fines or overdue books until the library record for that student has been cleared.
· Parents who have provided a current email address will receive library notices of overdue items. You may send the address with the student’s name and grade to Mrs. Haggard: [email protected].
· There is a charge of 10 cents per page, payable in advance, for printing from library computers. Color copies are available for 50 cents per page.
· Students who use the Internet at AMS must have on file a copy of the Acceptable Use Policy of the Arlington Community Schools, signed by both the student and the parent. Students must ask permission before accessing the internet on library computers. Permission and payment are required before printing. Library computers are reserved for accessing the library’s catalog, homework, and research.
· Library Activities for students include Library Crew, Battle of the Books, a bookmark contest, VSBA voting, and other occasional programs. Check the library web page for more information and application or registration directions.
