I've seen a couple of posts this week on adolescents and reading that I'd like to share. It's not just because I'm a librarian, a teacher and a reader that I believe in the importance of reading. Our students are and will continue to be bombarded with all kinds of media and information. We've seen news articles about the number of college students who require remedial courses. We know that our students must read well in order to be prepared for their futures.
And yet, we also live in a world where many things compete for our time and attention. Sometimes, with the press of homework and sports and other activities, reading for pleasure gets shoved to the back burner. But it is important, especially for our students. We, as adults and role models and authority figures, need to encourage reading and help our students learn to make time for it.
Here are two posts for your consideration. I'd love to hear your views.
