According to my alumni magazine from the University of Oklahoma, there is a rock outside the library with the inscription, "The spirit of learning is a lasting frontier." I collect quotes I like, and the ones on reading or learning are the ones that resonate the most with me. So I tore this one out of the last issue of the OU magazine to add to my collection. I've been toying with the idea of starting a blog for some time, and this quote suggested the name: Notes from the Frontier.
I am passionate about learning--lifelong learning. People who are lifelong learners are the ones who will adapt to changing technologies and circumstances. Alvin Toffler has said, "The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn." A friend shared this quote from Levar Burton with me:
If you are a reader, then you have the ability to educate yourself. When you have the
ability to be a lifelong learner, there are no limits on what you can acquire in terms of knowledge and information. It represents the ultimate freedom of mankind.
As a middle school librarian, almost everything I do is about reading and learning. The two go hand in hand. I hope to use this blog to talk about what I'm reading and learning, and what I hope my students will read and learn. You are welcome to join me on this lasting frontier. We might even share a few good quotes along the way.
