From my posts (or lack of them) for the month of July, you would think I have been on an extensive vacation! I did take several short trips during July. However, I've still been reading and listening to books while I sew or drive.
One of my trips was to Birmingham to attend a Scholastic Reading Summit. I heard two awesome speakers: Donalyn Miller and John Schumacher. Plus they had a big room set up like a Scholastic Book Fair, and I got to shop! I came home with some great ideas and several new books to read.
In preparation for attending the summit, I read Miller's Reading in the Wild. I gleaned so many ideas from this book. In particular, she challenged me to try to help my middle school students become independent readers. I love suggesting books to students, and I will continue to do that. However, I want my students to continue to read on their own, long after they leave AMS or outgrow my recommendations. I hope to implement some of Miller's ideas to do that this year.
Thank you, Donalyn Miller, for your inspiration! I'm looking forward to the new school year.
